I still remember the first time I was introduced to Major Ian Thomas, founder of Torchbearers and Capernwray Bible schools. It was 1960. I was 26 years old, studying at Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Oregon.

Just days away from Christmas Break, my mind had already checked out for vacation. As I walked into chapel that cold morning, I wasn’t expecting much.

The speaker was someone I had never heard before, but he immediately grabbed my attention. His thick British accent and staccato delivery was different than most other speakers we had on campus. He was lively and full of vigor. I couldn’t help but listen to what he had to say. His message that morning, based on Galatians 2:20, had a profound impact on my life.

I remember running to my room after chapel, falling on my knees, and praying for hours. The Lord used Major Thomas to bring clarity to my calling as a missionary and to revolutionize my life. I know my story is not unique. Major Ian Thomas, and the ministry of Torchbearers and Capernwray Bible schools, has impacted millions around the world.

I praise the Lord for such a godly man, using his God-given vision and passion for the Bible to equip, challenge, and mobilize hundreds of thousands of young people around the world.
