How Effective Worship Leaders Lead Their Worship Team to Grow Spiritually in 4 Easy Steps
By Jim R Williams

As worship leaders, our job is not only to lead, teach, and model biblical worship to the congregation, but it is also to help the worship team to grow spiritually, and to help them mature in their walk with God. As under-shepherds, we have a responsibility to care for the flock God has put in our care. We are to feed His sheep. In that we have the responsibility to help our teams grow spiritually.

Now I must say this. You cannot force anyone to grow. We are to nourish them with the word of God, and to guide and encourage them in the path to maturity, but we cannot make them grow. I have run into this personally. I had a fellow on my team who every time I would nudge him in his walk he would become defensive. The lesson I learned from this was just to step back, model for him what to do, and allow the Holy Spirit to work in him. I am glad to say that by me taking this approach he is slowly, very slowly maturing in his walk with God. This has also been a lesson to me that all things are in Gods timing not mine.

Here are the 4 steps I personally use to encourage my teams to grow spiritually and to help them mature in their walk with God.

1. Personal Prayer Time. Not only should you make prayer a priority when the team is together, but encourage them to make personal prayer time at home a priority. Not only for themselves but interceding for others. There is incredible growth, maturity, and power in intercession

2. Personal Praise and worship. Encourage all team members to have a personal worship time at home. Doing this will not only prepare them for corporate worship but will increase their intimacy with God.

3. Personal bible study. Personal bible study is a must for anyone who desires to grow in his or her walk and maturity as a Christian. Teach them to hide His Word in their hearts. Encourage them to read 1 chapter a day. Even better, have the whole team read the same chapter daily. Talk about building unity.

4. Journaling. Encourage your team to journal their walk with God. Daily journaling about what God is speaking to them from their daily reading. Encourage them to journal their prayers, and how God answers them. A journal is such a fantastic tool to see where you've been and also to see how God has worked in your life.

Here is a bonus step, Lead by example. A good leader will not ask his team to do anything that he's not already doing or willing to do. In other words lead by example.
